Job Summary:

Cibola General Hospital is seeking a highly skilled Financial Counselor to join our Patient Financial Services team. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional financial experience to our patients, ensuring they understand their insurance benefits and financial liability.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Serve as the primary point of contact for all financial assistance-related questions and concerns.
  2. Communicate with patients to understand their financial, social, and medical histories, and gather relevant information to process financial assistance requests.
  3. Document all communication and follow-up in our Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system and send written confirmation to patients regarding payment arrangements.
  4. Assess patients' financial situations through verification of insurance benefits and determine their financial ability to pay.
  5. Initiate the financial screening process to evaluate eligibility for assistance programs and assist patients in completing financial statements and gathering supporting documentation.
  6. Determine eligibility for care at Cibola General Hospital by assessing patient eligibility for Medical Assistance, Emergency Medical Assistance, Community Programs, and Government Programs.
  7. Assess and offer payment alternatives, including prepayment for elective care, and apply for Cibola General Hospital's financial assistance program.
  8. Identify eligible financial programming options and assist in completing necessary documentation for federal, state, or Cibola General Hospital financial assistance programs.
  9. Explain Cibola General Hospital's payment policy to patients if a program is not available to assist with payment.
  10. Calculate and explain patient liability before or at the time of service.
  11. Counsel patients on out-of-pocket liabilities and collect deductibles, pre-payments, and outstanding balances following established collection procedures.
  12. Establish payment plans with patients and document agreements appropriately.
  13. Communicate financial coverage status and applicable financial decisions with all relevant parties, including patients, families, referring clinicians, and Cibola General Hospital clinicians.
  14. Maintain self-pay accounts, initiate collection procedures when necessary, and send letters to patients regarding account status.
  15. Pursue education opportunities to remain current with changes in the healthcare industry.
  16. Promote effective working relationships and work collaboratively as part of a team to facilitate the department's ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  17. Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  18. Attend on-site and off-site community engagement activities and on-site and off-site clinic events as needed.
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  1. A High School Diploma or GED.
  2. An Associate degree is preferred.
  3. Two years of experience in healthcare Revenue Cycle is preferred.
  4. Experience in providing high-level customer service.
  5. Excellent organization and time management skills, along with excellent oral and written communication skills.
  6. A strong team player with the ability to learn quickly, build and maintain long-term relationships, and work with minimal supervision.
  7. Proficient computing skills.
  8. A high level of accuracy and attention to detail, flexibility, and ability to attend to competing priorities in an effective and timely manner.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

You will need:

  1. Knowledge of medical billing and collection practices.
  2. Knowledge of computer programs.
  3. Knowledge of business office procedures.
  4. Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices.
  5. Ability to operate a computer, basic office equipment, and a multi-line telephone system.
  6. Skill in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner.
  7. Ability to read, understand, and follow both oral and written instructions.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, co-workers, and the public.
  9. Must be well-organized and detail-oriented.
Additional Qualifications:

Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus.
