Position Overview:
The Reid Park Zoo is actively seeking a dedicated Zoo Keeper to contribute to the exceptional care of our African elephant family. This role is integral to our positive reinforcement training program, which prioritizes the well-being and autonomy of the elephants. Our facility is proud to support the African elephant Species Survival Plan (SSP) and currently houses five female elephants, ranging from infants to those over 33 years of age.
Organizational Mission:
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, our mission is to foster memorable experiences that connect individuals with wildlife, ensuring the conservation of both animals and their habitats. We strive to offer educational and engaging experiences for visitors of all ages, welcoming approximately 500,000 guests annually.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with a team of animal care professionals to provide exceptional husbandry for a breeding herd of African elephants.
- Engage in daily care activities, including cleaning, training, diet preparation, and enrichment.
- Administer medications and treatments under veterinary supervision.
- Communicate effectively with team members and follow verbal instructions for animal care tasks.
- Oversee and train volunteers, interns, and docents in animal care practices.
- Maintain safety protocols and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations.
- Participate in habitat maintenance and operate heavy machinery as required.
- Deliver educational presentations to zoo visitors, showcasing knowledge of African elephant behavior and conservation.
- Keep detailed records on animal health, training, and welfare.
Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
- Valid US driver's license.
- Experience with positive reinforcement training techniques.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
- Physical capability to lift at least 50 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with elephants.
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field or equivalent experience.
- Knowledge of AZA regulations and participation in the AZA community.
Compensation and Benefits:
The hourly wage for this position ranges from $17.67 to $20.69.
