Position Overview

The Radiation Therapy Specialist operates under direct supervision, executing various radiotherapy and hyperthermia treatment procedures at a technical level. Key responsibilities encompass preparing patients for treatment, ensuring adherence to specific treatment protocols, documenting performed treatments, and collaborating with departmental staff to optimize service efficiency. As a multi-campus department, staff may be assigned to different campuses as per scheduling guidelines. Adherence to established Medical Center Environmental Safety Policies, HIPAA Standards, Joint Commission guidelines, and departmental quality improvement projects is mandatory.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Assessment
    1. Determine the type and area for treatment preparation, including conducting simulations when necessary.
    2. Utilize available reports and medical records to identify current or potential issues.
    3. Recognize patient difficulties and take appropriate action, consulting with relevant professionals as needed.
  2. Implementation
    1. Set up equipment and computer systems.
    2. Prepare and verify all necessary documentation prior to treatment, including consents and MD orders.
    3. Mark reference points on the patient's body as required.
    4. Position patients for treatment and confirm imaging requirements.
    5. Conduct TIME OUT procedures.
    6. Document treatments in the electronic medical record and relevant files.
    7. Make minor adjustments to equipment as necessary.
  3. Advocacy/Patient Education
    1. Address the emotional needs of patients with sensitivity and appropriate communication.
    2. Clarify treatment procedures, potential side effects, and care instructions to patients.
    3. Provide instruction to students and collaborate with other departmental staff.
  4. Coordination/Communication
    1. Maintain open lines of communication to ensure continuity of care for patients and their families.
    2. Engage in patient-centered conferences as requested.
    3. Actively participate in departmental meetings.
  5. Professionalism/Education
    1. Exhibit courtesy and professionalism in all communications and practices.
    2. Take responsibility for personal career development, staying informed of trends in the field.
    3. Enhance skills and demonstrate initiative.
    4. Adhere to work-related policies, including license renewal and other certifications.
    5. Follow all Medical Center policies regarding infection control, safety, and clinical practices.

Required Qualifications
  • Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Therapeutic Radiology.
  • Licensure in Therapeutic Radiology by the state of California.
  • BLS certification.
  • Experience with Megavoltage, supervoltage, and orthovoltage machines.
  • Knowledge of simulation procedures, IORT, radioactive implants, HDR, brachytherapy, and hyperthermia techniques.
  • Graduation from an accredited radiation therapy program.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in treatment decisions.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with diverse individuals.
  • A positive attitude towards teamwork is essential.
License/Certification
  • Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Therapeutic Radiology.
  • Licensure in Therapeutic Radiology by the state of California.
  • BLS certification.
