Job Summary:

This position is responsible for coordinating and managing the day-to-day operations of the laboratory, ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies and implementing quality control measures. The Laboratory Supervisor will oversee the work activities of assigned personnel, maintain accurate attendance records, and assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day supervision of laboratory testing personnel, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of test results, maintaining quality control and quality assurance standards.
  • Develop and implement new procedures, instrumentation, and quality control measures, in conjunction with the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee the work activities of assigned personnel, maintaining accurate attendance records and providing ongoing performance reviews.
  • Assist in the orientation and development of personnel competencies, ensuring all personnel are held accountable for their work.
  • Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards as promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities.
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate the work activities of assigned section(s) and shift(s), ensuring efficient and effective operations.
  • Keep accurate records of all laboratory activities, including test results, quality control data, and personnel performance.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive performance improvement program, involving laboratory personnel in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Provide input on personnel for hire, fire, transfer, interview, disciplinary probation, etc., and counsel and document technical deficiencies.
  • Perform skills review and competency assessments, maintaining appropriate documentation on all technical personnel.
  • Oversee and enforce expectations of personnel in assigned section(s), ensuring all personnel are held accountable for their work.
  • Participate in proficiency testing surveys, reviewing and evaluating results, and maintaining copies of survey records in section(s).
  • Coordinate and attend meetings as required to discuss changes and developments regarding policies, equipment, procedures, staffing, etc.
  • Utilize and have a thorough working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System and applications thereof.
  • Demonstrate competence to perform assigned patient care responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of patients served by the department.
  • Appropriately adapt assigned patient assessment, treatment, and/or care methods to accommodate the unique physical, psychosocial, cultural, age-specific, and other developmental needs of each patient served.
  • Process patient specimens, including collection, handling, and distribution, always cognizant of minimal pediatric specimen volumes (when required).
  • Perform all routine and complicated laboratory procedures in the primary section to which assigned, about age (pedi) or sex-specific values.
  • Provide notification and documentation of critical laboratory values obtained.
  • Calculate, enter, and/or verify results of laboratory procedures.
  • Perform all duties in a manner that protects the confidentiality of patients and does not solicit or disclose any confidential information unless it is necessary for the performance of assigned job duties.
  • Keep abreast of Medical Technology, by reading Journals, texts, and technical bulletins; attend workshops and seminars; become active in local professional associations.
  • Demonstrate adherence to the CORE values of CHRISTUS Health.
