Job Title: Janitor

Job Summary:

The Salvation Army is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Janitor to join our team at the Harbor House Family Emergency Shelter in San Francisco. As a Janitor, you will be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the shelter, ensuring a safe and healthy environment for our residents and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Clean and maintain designated building areas, including dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and cleaning vents, restrooms, and other high-traffic areas.
  • Empty trash receptacles and recycling bins, and prepare for removal by Operations Attendants.
  • Ensure unused areas of the building are locked for safety and security.
  • Perform routine inspection and maintenance activities as needed, and document results.
  • Follow all health, safety regulations, and chemical storage and hygiene best practices.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  • Ability to read and understand written and oral communications in English.
  • Experience in building maintenance, janitorial, and/or repair work.
  • Knowledge of cleaning equipment, chemicals, and appliances.
  • Knowledge of safe disposal of chemical liquids and hazardous components.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis.
  • Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead.
  • Ability to operate telephone.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
