Job Overview


The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) operates under the guidance of a licensed healthcare provider, a registered nurse, or other authorized health professional as per the regulations set forth by the Department of Health Regulatory Boards.

The LPN is responsible for coordinating and overseeing the care delivered to designated patients.

Working under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), LPNs execute care that is suitable for the patient demographic and fulfill daily patient care requirements.

The LPN's responsibilities are aligned with the unit's care delivery model. This position collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide care as directed by the RN.

The LPN upholds a culture that reflects Centra's commitment to quality and service, fosters a safe patient environment, and contributes to a positive workplace atmosphere.

The practice of the LPN embodies the ethical standards outlined by the American Nurses Association and adheres to the Nurse Practice Act of Virginia.


Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of an RN, the LPN will:

1. Plan, coordinate, manage, and document care for assigned patients as necessary.

2. Delegate tasks to appropriate care providers.

3. Utilize critical thinking skills for effective clinical decision-making and prioritization.

4. Communicate and collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to strategize patient care.

5. Establish and maintain an environment that safeguards patients from harm.

6. Adhere to National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).

7. Engage in initiatives stemming from quality indicators and/or unit-based quality metrics.

8. Reinforce patient and/or caregiver education using relevant resources.

9. Promote and maintain a culture that reflects Centra's best practices.

10. Implement changes based on evidence-based practices or research findings.

11. Apply service excellence principles in interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.

12. Participate in service recovery and utilize appropriate resources during complex situations.

13. Address conflict resolution in a timely and appropriate manner.

14. Identify personal contributions to unit-based goals.

15. Contribute to processes that enhance efficient patient flow.

16. Utilize resources (e.g., time, personnel, supplies) in a cost-effective manner.

17. Engage in professional development through self-assessment and pursuit of degrees, certifications, and continuing education.

18. Support a learning-conducive environment for all students from various academic programs.

19. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education:
Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing Program.

Required Certifications and Licensures:

Must possess a current, active license as a practical nurse in Virginia or hold a current multistate licensure privilege as a practical nurse.
Must have a current, active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) course completion card.
