GENERAL OVERVIEW:
Under general supervision and following established protocols, this role involves a range of routine laboratory support tasks including order processing, specimen collection, transportation, tracking, receipt, and analysis. The position may require the use of various information systems to complete tasks efficiently. Responsibilities also include the operation and maintenance of pre-analytic and post-analytic laboratory equipment, which may involve laboratory automation. Occasional phlebotomy services may be required at specific locations. The role necessitates professional interaction with patients, laboratory personnel, and caregivers.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Prepares patient specimens for laboratory analysis, focusing on both pre-analytic and post-analytic processes.
2. Accurately inputs patient demographic, insurance, and test order details into various computer systems in accordance with standard protocols, ensuring timely processing while maintaining patient confidentiality.
3. Reviews laboratory requisition forms for completeness and accuracy, addressing and documenting any discrepancies as necessary. Organizes and maintains the storage of laboratory submission forms according to established protocols.
4. Handles specimens with care during preparation, storage, and order entry to ensure the identity and integrity of samples are preserved.
5. Conducts and documents maintenance on pre-analytic and post-analytic laboratory equipment, which includes specimen barcode label printers, freezers, refrigerators, centrifuges, glassware cleaning equipment, autoclaves, and laboratory automation systems as required.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.
Experience in a healthcare environment, particularly in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting, is preferred.
Familiarity with medical terminology and human anatomy is advantageous.
Candidates with college-level coursework in scientific disciplines are preferred.
