The Opportunity

The Department of Counselor Education & School Psychology at the University of Central Florida seeks a visionary leader to serve as professor and department chair, a full-time 12-month, tenured position, anticipated to begin Summer 2025.

The department provides excellence in teaching, research, and service related to clinical mental health counseling; counselor education and supervision; marriage, couple, and family therapy; school counseling; and school psychology. Dedicated to students in the department, the faculty delivers outstanding instruction primarily at the graduate level, incorporating learning, service, and inquiry.

The department consistently attracts and cultivates a diverse student population for success in careers in community agencies and centers, non-profit organizations, and schools, promoting the functionality of individuals, groups, and communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide academic leadership in developing and defining the department's strategic plan.
  • Create an environment within the department that encourages quality scholarship and research to inform the discipline.
  • Promote community-based partnerships that positively impact students, faculty, and the community.
  • Collaborate with other administrators within the college to support college and university goals and initiatives.
  • Advocate for department priorities among college and university administrators.
  • Support faculty and students as they contribute to local, regional, national, and international conversations regarding clinical mental health counseling; counselor education and supervision; marriage, couple, and family therapy; school counseling; and school psychology.
  • Lead and manage the development of departmental missions in teaching, research, and service.
  • Build and maintain an inclusive, collegial, and collaborative organizational culture within the department.
  • Coordinate the execution of the department's educational programs with faculty through equitable assignments of duties to teaching, research, and service.
  • Lead faculty in addressing key issues within the unit, including future direction of the department, acquiring resources, strengthening promotion and tenure standards, and aligning with college and university initiatives.
  • Lead all faculty and staff recruitment activities, supporting the best interests of the department.
  • Coordinate budget allocation and planning with the college offices.
  • Conduct annual evaluations of faculty and staff, as appropriate.

Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in Counselor Education or School Psychology or closely related field from an accredited institution and have previously achieved the rank of at least a tenured associate professor in his or her academic career.
  • Be eligible for appointment at the academic rank of professor with tenure.
  • Prior experience serving in an administrative capacity within higher education, such as serving in role(s) as program coordinator, center director, department chair, associate dean, or other appropriate leadership level experience within the university setting.
  • Demonstrated record of supporting faculty and students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated skill related to organization, planning, budgeting, and administration.
  • Be collegial and have demonstrated experience in working in interdisciplinary activities.
  • Prior experience with national accreditation of graduate programs (CACREP and/or NASP).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Hold the rank of professor with tenure at a research doctoral-granting university (very high research activity or high research activity).
  • A distinguished record of research and scholarship, academic, and programmatic leadership.
  • Experience with administration of graduate programs.
  • Demonstrated experience with community-based interdisciplinary research.
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive collaborative relationships with university administrators, faculty, staff, students, professional societies/organizations, and alumni.
  • History working with student experiential learning activities such as practicum and internship experiences.
  • Experience in fundraising to secure external funding to support academic program performance and growth.
