Job SummaryThis position is only for currently enrolled Clayton State University students who qualify for Federal Work Study. The Center for Academic Success is seeking a Peer Academic Coach to work with undergraduate students across all disciplines of the University.
Peer Academic Coaching provides a structured, collaborative approach to support students and is intended to increase a student's ability to become a more self-directed learner by identifying learning strategies and academic resources that best match the student's individual preference for processing information.
Responsibilities- Provide basic academic coaching for students from all disciplines, including conducting initial assessments, outreach, and providing ongoing coaching in targeted areas.
- Document each coaching session.
- Refer students to senior academic coaching staff for more in-depth academic coaching needs and plans for specialized academic support.
- Track student progress throughout the semester and in subsequent semesters.
- Administer the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) and work with students to increase competency in the areas noted for improvement.
- Respond to alerts or referrals from faculty regarding students in need of academic support.
- Conduct visits to present information on study skills, note-taking, time management, critical thinking, goal setting, etc.
- Collaborate with resident assistants to support students in Laker Hall.
- Collaborate with the coordinator and housing to implement programming.
- Promote student awareness of CAS and all programs/services offered.
- Collaborate with the entire CAS staff to support programming and the University¿s student population.
- Other special projects as assigned.
The candidate must have earned a minimum of 30 credit hours and demonstrated success as an undergraduate student with a GPA of 2.75 or higher. The ideal candidate is student-focused, organized, and detail-oriented and has excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
The candidate must have the ability to handle confidential data with discretion and tact while being able to work independently and in a team environment. The ideal candidate should have experience presenting information to small and large groups.
The ideal candidate should be able to help students in the following areas:
- Establishing and maintaining positive daily routines
- Identifying campus resources
- Time management
- Establishing good study habits and setting realistic weekly study goals
- Avoiding procrastination
- Utilizing critical thinking skills
The student should be able to use critical thinking and metacognitive skills to develop rapport with students and assist the students with identifying areas of strength and weakness related to their academic performance.
Should be able to think critically to assist students as they identify short- and long-range academic goals.
Should be able to scaffold undergraduate students in developing realistic plans related to their academic goals.
Should be able to scaffold undergraduate students by assisting them in evaluating strategies and resources that will help them execute their academic goals.
Should gain an understanding of factors involved in helping undergraduate students persist to degree completion.
Should be able to scaffold undergraduate students to become more self-directed learners.
