Electrical Engineer III Building Power Systems

The Building Electrical Group at Dennis Group Springfield is responsible for designing and building electrical systems for our food and beverage production facilities. Our team is involved in designing electrical systems, calculating power loads, determining equipment sizes, and selecting suitable vendors and sub-contractors. The successful candidate will have technical responsibility for scoping, performing, and delivering multiple concurrent project assignments.
Key Responsibilities
- Designing electrical systems for building power, including normal, emergency, and standby power distribution systems for 208v, 480v, and medium voltage.
- Executing duties on larger projects independently and leading client contact and lead engineer responsibilities.
- Documenting all necessary calculations for the design, including short circuit, selective coordination, arc flash, generator sizing, and load calculations.
- Maintaining project document organization and managing time to meet commitments.
- Understanding Ohms Law, AC/DC, electric and magnetic fields, power system theory, and 3-phase vector math.
- Designing lighting for food processing spaces, including lighting calculations and coordinating fixture placement with other trades.
- Designing fire alarm systems per NFPA 72, 101, and local building code.
- Specifying means and methods, equipment, and low voltage systems, including LAN, phones, PA, Wi-Fi, access control, cameras, and other common work.
- Creating power plans, one-line and panel schedules, and defining fire alarm requirements per IBC and NFPA 101.
- Reviewing scope with clients, creating and managing needs lists, and producing bid documents.
- Procuring long lead light fixtures and power distribution equipment, including switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, transformers, MCC's, generators, variable speed drives, and UPS's.
- Performing short circuit calculations, estimating weights of main tray/trapezes and equipment, and assisting in managing electrical bid processes.
- Actively participating in department-wide standard development, updates, and maintenance, researching electrical building/power materials and best practices, and supporting talent growth within the organization.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related 4-year degree.
- 8+ years of work experience in electrical systems for building power, designing lighting, fire alarm systems, and low voltage systems for building spaces.
- 8+ years of work experience in electrical bid documents and procuring electrical materials and equipment.
- 8+ years of work experience in AutoCAD, Revit, or other related design programs.
- Relevant experience in a manufacturing or construction setting preferred.
- FE or PE tracked desirable.
- Travel to customer project sites for fieldwork, review, audit, and meetings, estimated 25%.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
