We are seeking a skilled Transportation Mechanic I to join our team at Carteret County Public Schools. This is a critical role that requires a high level of expertise in vehicle maintenance and repair.
Key Responsibilities- Perform routine bus maintenance and preventive care to ensure vehicles are in good working condition.
- Diagnose and repair minor and frequently occurring mechanical problems using diagnostic equipment.
- Fill fuel tanks on school buses and school-owned vehicles.
- Lubricate moving parts of vehicle chassis.
- Check, add, and replace brake and steering fluids.
- Check, add, and change engine oil.
- Install air and oil filters.
- Replace wiper blades and fan belts.
- Rotate, replace, and repair tires.
- Replace brake linings.
- Clean, adjust, and change spark plugs.
- Drain and clean radiators.
- Inspect exterior and interior of vehicles for defects.
- Remove minor dents.
- Paint buses and vehicles with spray equipment.
- Test headlight alignment and make necessary adjustments.
- Clean fuel systems, ignition systems, and electrical components.
- Test and replace batteries as needed.
- Check and repair doors and lifts.
- Repair seat belts.
- Repair broken windows.
- Appropriate North Carolina driver's license for the weight and type of vehicles operated as required by the Department of Motor Vehicles (Class A CDL) with N, P&S endorsements.
- N.C. School Bus Inspector Certification.
This is a 12-month work year position with a salary based on the local salary scale. The ideal candidate will have a strong knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Demonstrate knowledge of school bus and vehicle operation and maintenance.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines.
- Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine maintenance, tire replacement, and vehicle body repair.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to physically perform most repairs.
- Demonstrate general knowledge and skill in the use and operation of shop tools and machinery.
- Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, and installation and repair charts.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
- Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, such as, walk, lift, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch and key requiring repetitive motions.
