Role Summary and Responsibilities
As a Surgical Services Technician, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality surgical care. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with the circulating perioperative nurse during surgical procedures.
  • Preparing and maintaining the sterile field, ensuring all necessary sterile supplies and equipment are ready.
  • Assisting the surgeon by providing sterile instruments and supplies efficiently and safely.
  • Adhering to current AORN and regulatory standards, as well as established policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will:

  • Plan and gather the required equipment and supplies for assigned procedures based on physician preferences and patient needs.
  • Prepare equipment and supplies according to manufacturer specifications for surgical use.
  • Open sterile packs and instruments following established aseptic techniques.
  • Monitor the sterile field throughout the procedure and take corrective actions as necessary.
  • Prepare medications and solutions under the direction of the Registered Nurse, following physician orders.
  • Maintain accountability for instruments, sponges, and sharps during the surgical procedure.
  • Follow safety protocols for handling sharp instruments and hazardous materials.

Qualifications
To be considered for this position, you must meet the following requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technologist program, or one year of experience in a hospital setting as a surgical technologist for those hired before a specified date.
  • If not certified, no license or registration is required for the Sterile Processing Department; however, certification is mandatory for surgical technologists entering practice after a specified date.
  • If certified, you must hold one of the following: CST – Certified Surgical Technologist through the National Board for Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting, or TS-C – Tech in Surgery, Certified through the National Center for Competency Testing.
