Key Responsibilities:

  • The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for planning and delivering comprehensive nursing care, which includes executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers, administering medications, and assisting in patient examinations and treatments.
  • Utilizes nursing and supervisory techniques essential for the care and treatment of inmates/residents.
  • Conducts all clinical procedures within the limits of their education and licensure, applying appropriate nursing skills in the care of inmates/residents.
  • Participates in sick calls alongside physicians to assess inmates/residents, preparing necessary documentation and examination areas.
  • Manages medication distribution, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures.
  • Communicates with Licensed Independent Providers regarding medication and treatment orders, as well as emergencies.
  • Evaluates and assesses new inmates/residents for illnesses or injuries, referring them to emergency services as necessary.
  • Implements emergency procedures when required and informs Licensed Independent Providers for further treatment orders.
  • Facilitates coordination of medical services provided by contracted personnel, ensuring their needs are met.

Essential Skills:

  • Monitors inmate/resident hospitalizations for potential early releases when appropriate.
  • Provides oversight and guidance to licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical personnel.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with facility staff, nursing teams, contract providers, and external healthcare agencies.
  • Applies established corporate and facility policies in decision-making while exercising sound independent judgment.
  • Regularly assesses the delivery of medical services to prevent unnecessary duplication or misuse.
  • Ensures the security and confidentiality of all medical records.
  • Assists the Health Service Administrator in reviewing medical files to verify that all services are properly documented.
  • Closely monitors potential catastrophic illnesses among inmates/residents.
  • Conducts audits of pharmacy usage to ensure adherence to formulary guidelines.
  • Complies with pharmacy regulations, particularly those related to controlled substances, while observing inmate/resident behavior.
  • Inspects the medical unit for potential contraband items and ensures proper storage or disposal of supplies.
  • Provides health counseling and education on an individual or group basis as required.
  • Assists the Health Service Administrator in preparing and maintaining various records, reports, and logs with appropriate documentation.

Qualifications:

Current BLS certification from AHA

Valid RN License
