Job Summary:The Behavioral Health Nurse will provide professional nursing care to emotionally disturbed and/or mentally ill patients in a 50-bed Behavioral Health Hospital Unit. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in psychiatric nursing and be able to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team to coordinate care and develop treatment plans.
Key Responsibilities:- Assume professional responsibility and accountability for a group of residents/patients, including medication administration, teaching, and supervision of nursing staff.
- Conduct intake assessments and ongoing systematic assessments to establish a comprehensive goal-directed interdisciplinary plan.
- Plan and provide nursing care for patients, communicating effectively with residents/patients, families, colleagues, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
- Administer and note reactions to psychotropic drugs and other medications, arranging further medical attention when necessary.
- Assist patients in understanding the nature of emotional disturbances and accepting the need for treatment.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and patients, testing for vital signs of pain and ensuring treatments of pain.
- Document all patient information on medical charts and follow physician's written orders, maintaining patient confidentiality.
- Perform administrative assignments, such as filing, answering phones, typing, and completing progress notes in the computer system.
- Provide courteous, high-quality service to patients and members of the public, responding to requests for service or making appropriate referrals.
- Supervise the care provided by CNAs & LPNs, ensuring adherence to the plan of care, resident profile, policies, and procedures.
- Participate in educational programs, inservices, meetings, and workshops, utilizing current literature to enhance professional skills and knowledge.
- Participate in quality improvement activities as directed.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN preferred.
- Minimum one year clinical experience, preferably in an acute and/or Behavioral Health capacity.
- Current RN or LPN license in the State of Connecticut, in good standing.
- Knowledge of professional nursing principles, procedures, and techniques used in the care and treatment of psychiatric patients.
- Social, psychological, and physical factors of mental and emotional disorders.
- Medications, including psychotropic drugs, and effects on psychiatric patients.
- State of Connecticut laws and regulations for the nursing profession.
- Theories, principles, and techniques of group and individual psychotherapy.
- Symptoms and behavior patterns of emotionally disturbed mentally ill patients.
- Medical and psychiatric emergency procedures.
The Behavioral Health Nurse will work in a fast-paced hospital environment, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will be able to work effectively in a team setting, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple responsibilities.
