Position Overview:

The Staff Attorney plays a crucial role in ensuring adherence to legal standards, reporting requirements, and enforcement protocols within the educational institution. This position involves providing guidance and suggesting modifications to policies and procedures in light of evolving laws and legal precedents.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the General Counsel to interpret the legal framework governing the institution.
  • Offer legal and policy advice across various domains, including employment law, student rights, intellectual property, real estate, contracts, and civil rights.
  • Conduct thorough investigations into compliance-related complaints in partnership with relevant departments.
  • Draft, negotiate, and review contracts and affiliation agreements.
  • Manage responses to public records requests while ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
  • Develop and implement compliance training programs to promote ethical standards and legal awareness.
Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a J.D. or LLB from an ABA-accredited law school and hold a license to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction or obtain licensure within a specified timeframe. A minimum of one year of experience as a practicing attorney or in-house counsel in a complex organizational setting is required.

Essential Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of higher education law and employment regulations.
  • Excellent analytical and public speaking abilities.
  • Proficient in legal writing and advocacy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Working Conditions:

This position is primarily office-based, requiring occasional physical activity to lift or move objects. The role involves frequent communication with various stakeholders and may require evening or weekend hours as necessary.

Preferred Experience:

Experience in employment law, risk management, and legal representation within the higher education sector is highly desirable.

Training Requirements:

Completion of annual training related to campus security and Title IX regulations is mandatory.
