We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Physical Therapy Assistant to join our team at the Detroit Medical Center. Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of a Physical Therapist, the Physical Therapy Assistant will provide direct patient care using standard physical therapy procedures. This includes instructing patients and family members, overseeing students and volunteers, and participating in program development and education activities.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide individual patient treatment, including therapeutic exercise, gait training, mat mobility, and transfers.
  • Assist Physical Therapist in patient evaluation and assess functional skills of patients.
  • Perform prosthetic training, administer modality treatments, and measure and recommend equipment such as wheelchairs, orthoses, and assistive devices.
  • Instruct patients and family members on transfers, gait training, and home exercise programs.
  • Participate in chart rounds, admission and discharge conferences, family conferences, and team development conferences.
  • Maintain accurate records, including initial, interim, and discharge documentation, home care programs, and equipment orders and prescriptions.
  • Prepare special reports as requested and receive formal supervision from a Physical Therapist to ensure all patient documentation is reviewed and co-signed.
  • Attend and contribute to organizational and program development team and departmental meetings.
  • Supervise, instruct, and evaluate students and volunteers.
  • Maintain current knowledge of physical therapy theory and techniques through reading, attendance at meetings and seminars, and involvement in professional organizations.
Requirements:
  • Associate's degree in Physical Therapy with coursework in anatomy, biology, physiology, and psychology.
  • One year of experience in a clinical setting preferred.
  • Current license to practice as a PTA in the state of Michigan.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, basic knowledge and skill in common physical therapy practices and procedures, visual acuity to observe patient response to treatment, and manual dexterity to operate equipment.
