Grounds Maintenance Professional

We are seeking a skilled Grounds Maintenance Professional to join our team at Windham Public Schools.
**Job Overview:**
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and attractive environment throughout the district. This will involve performing a variety of grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing lawns, trimming grass, pruning shrubs and trees, removing fallen or damaged leaves and branches, and maintaining flower beds and mulch beds.
**Responsibilities:**
- Maintain a polite and helpful attitude when dealing with students, staff and the public.
- Conform to all Board policies and administrative rules and regulations.
- Mow lawns and trim grass around walks, flower beds, trees and walls.
- Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth.
- Remove fallen or damaged leaves, branches and twigs using mowers, tractors and other hand and power tools.
- Maintain flower beds, mulch beds or other decorative vegetation.
- Maintain and sharpen tools and make minor repairs on equipment as needed.
- Utilize independent judgement in performing grounds maintenance and activities.
- Remove snow and ice from walks and driveways using hand tools, machines or vehicles.
- Spread salt, pick up litter, rake and remove debris from grounds.
- Maintain driveways and parking lots, including but not limited to filling potholes and sweeping accumulated debris.
- Perform routine inspections, cleaning and maintenance on gardening and grounds equipment.
- Blow and sweep sidewalks, driveways, parking lots and other assigned areas.
- Maintain athletic fields and prepare them for events.
- Operate trucks and assorted power equipment, such as mowers, tractors, snow blowers, chain saws, electric clippers and pruning saws.
- Assist in the setup and tear-down of event furniture, such as tables, chairs, tents and portable stages.
- Assist in moving furniture, supplies and materials.
- Assist Maintenance and/or Custodians in repairs to building fixtures and equipment.
- Maintain routine records such as work orders, equipment repairs and maintenance and overtime assignments.
- Assist in custodial activities as needed.
**Requirements:**
- High School or vocational school graduate or GED.
- Ability to follow both oral and written directions with a minimum of supervision.
- Read and understand Safety Data Sheets (SOS).
- Knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in the care of school grounds.
- Knowledge of basic grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.
- Knowledge of safe work procedures in the operation of hand and power tools and equipment.
- Experience with the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment used in grounds keeping and minor repairs.
- Knowledge of safe and defensive driving practices and methods.
- Work effectively both independently and as a part of a team, including establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with those contacted during performance of job duties.
- Ability to observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of how to maintain tools and equipment in clean working order.
- Ability to use all relevant electronic and communication devices.
- Valid CT driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to be flexible and receptive to change.
- Be of sound physical health, able to lift various reasonably heavy objects for weight and size, climb ladders and generally perform tasks that involve moderately strenuous work.
**Salary:** $45,000 - $60,000 per year based on experience and education.
