- The Respiratory Therapist (RT) plays a vital role in supporting the mission, vision, and values of Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital, delivering exceptional Respiratory Care Services to the pediatric population.
- Key Responsibilities:
Possess comprehensive knowledge and skills to administer diagnostic and therapeutic respiratory treatments aimed at treating, restoring, and preventing cardiopulmonary dysfunction. - Conduct thorough pulmonary assessments and reassessments, implementing treatments such as mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, and diagnostic testing across various settings including inpatient, outpatient, and sleep lab.
- Diagnose and resolve equipment issues related to ventilators, BiPAPs, CPAPs, and other respiratory devices, ensuring functionality and safety.
- Engage in discharge planning, providing targeted respiratory interventions and educating patients and their families.
- Maintain a strong focus on customer service and patient safety in all interactions.
- May act as a mentor for new RTs and assist in patient transport as per established protocols.
- May supervise Respiratory Therapy students during their observational experiences under the guidance of the Department Director.
- Conduct quality control testing for blood gas machines and actively participate in performance improvement initiatives.
- Assume charge responsibilities after gaining adequate experience and with departmental approval.
- Educational Background: Graduate from a program accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (C.O.A.R.C.).
- Must hold a valid license to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) in the State of Maryland.
- Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is required.
- Must be a Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).
- Experience: A minimum of three years of pediatric RT experience is preferred.
- Exceptional communication skills and the ability to interact sensitively with patients and families.
- Proficient in positioning and mobilizing patients effectively.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Expertise in obtaining capillary blood gases and conducting physical assessments for respiratory patients.
- Ability to act decisively in emergency situations.
- Thorough understanding of respiratory care equipment and therapeutic modalities.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a healthcare team.
- Strong customer service orientation and multitasking abilities.
- Proficient in educating patients and families about respiratory care and treatments.
- Demonstrated time management skills with attention to detail.
- Computer proficiency is essential.
- May encounter stressful situations during emergencies or when managing multiple demands.
- Regular exposure to body fluids and infectious materials, necessitating adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment.
