The Native American Program (NAP) at NMLA offers complimentary legal services to eligible low-income Native Americans residing in proximity to the 19 Pueblos and the Mescalero Apache tribe. NAP prioritizes cases that address the unique legal challenges faced by Native Americans, including tribal law, estate planning involving tribal assets, and discrimination issues.
This role is primarily based in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico, with occasional travel required across the state.
Key Responsibilities
The Litigation Managing Attorney will work closely with the NAP Director and will be responsible for:
- Providing mentorship and supervision to NAP Staff Attorneys, Paralegals, and volunteers, including regular one-on-one meetings to discuss case management.
- Managing a caseload as lead or co-counsel for clients whose legal matters align with NAP's focus areas.
- Overseeing the intake process, preparing cases for acceptance, and delegating cases to NAP Staff Attorneys.
- Evaluating NAP's legal services to ensure alignment with organizational priorities and standards.
- Reviewing and approving all NAP casework and litigation matters.
- Coordinating monthly training sessions for NAP staff.
- Ensuring compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations and professional conduct standards.
- Acting as the primary liaison for Pueblo courts, managing court appointments and admissions.
- Assessing the needs of NAP applicants to develop strategies with potential systemic impact.
- Performing additional managerial or administrative tasks as directed by the NAP Director.
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of tribal law and federal/state Indian law, particularly in relation to NAP's focus areas.
- Experience within low-income tribal communities, ideally within Pueblo settings.
- Proven legal experience, including familiarity with tribal court processes and the unique status of Native individuals.
- Admission to practice law in New Mexico is required or the ability to obtain licensure.
- Proficient in working within diverse teams and adapting communication styles to various cultural contexts.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Prior experience in a managerial role, particularly in legal environments, is preferred.
- Willingness to travel throughout New Mexico as needed.
- Proficient in utilizing technology and remote communication tools for effective supervision and collaboration.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities and foster collaborative relationships within the organization and the communities served.
