Position Overview
In the role of Mechanical Engineering Operations Supervisor, you will oversee and coordinate all facets of our dynamic and adaptable service delivery for the UK Civil Service.
Collaborating closely with your administrative support team at one of our operational facilities, you will ensure that all assets within your jurisdiction are thoroughly inspected, maintained, and repaired to the highest standards. This will involve utilizing both internal resources and establishing partnerships with key external vendors across your designated areas. You will also play a crucial role in mentoring and developing your team to uphold the quality of service in alignment with the organization's mission.
Building strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders is vital for success in this position, making excellent interpersonal communication skills essential.
This position is location-based, requiring flexibility as part of a multidisciplinary team, where you will perform a variety of specialized technical tasks and collaborate with colleagues situated at different locations. Occasional travel may be necessary for meetings or training purposes.

The operational facility is one of several service centers across the country. The Mechanical Engineering team provides a safe and cost-effective repair service for all vehicles, machinery, and equipment utilized by the UK Civil Service in achieving its national objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Your primary responsibility will be to ensure an efficient and cost-effective service that supports the UK Civil Service in meeting its goals by maintaining and repairing vehicles, civil engineering, and mechanical equipment, while maximizing fleet availability.
You will supervise and coordinate all maintenance and repair activities conducted both in-house and by external contractors.
Essential Duties
- Evaluate individual tasks and take necessary actions to ensure safe and economical solutions.
- Communicate and collaborate with others regarding all repair and workshop-related matters.
- Manage mechanics to ensure they possess the necessary skills and training for their assigned duties.
- Ensure a safe and suitable working environment for all operations.
- Support the operations of vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
- Implement a robust system to ensure all assets undergo a minimum of annual inspections to meet safety and service standards, with formal reviews conducted regularly.
- Demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with workshop staff and stakeholders.
- Apply financial controls to all transactions.
- Develop daily work schedules for mechanical staff based on their training and experience.
- Generate risk assessments for workshop repairs and provide guidance on safety protocols.
- Conduct performance management meetings and prepare reports on staff performance.
- Assist in the workshop during peak demand periods.
Qualifications
- A recognized technical qualification such as NVQ or SVQ at a minimum level 1, or significant relevant experience.
- Proven experience in an engineering, fleet, or automotive role.
- Demonstrated experience in a customer-focused technical engineering environment.
- Strong understanding of legislative and regulatory compliance in an engineering context.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Customer-oriented and approachable.
- Experience managing budgets and financial operations.
- Experience in maintenance and repair of various types of vehicles, machinery, and equipment.
- Experience in a similar supervisory role.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Experience working within a small team.
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of mechanical, electronic, and hydraulic systems found in heavy machinery and equipment.
- Understanding of workshop operations, including inventory management, repairs, and compliance with legal obligations.
- Experience in staff management.
- Familiarity with fleet management software and asset tracking.
