About the Job

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is seeking a skilled Painter to join their team. As a Painter, you will be responsible for applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimming, and fixtures of buildings and other structures.

Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret work orders or receive instructions from supervisors regarding painting tasks.
  • Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other filler to ensure a smooth surface.
  • Selects premixed paints or mixes required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors.
  • Removes fixtures such as pictures and electric switch covers from walls prior to painting.
  • Spreads drop cloths over floors and room furnishings, and covers surfaces such as baseboards, door frames, and windows with masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
  • Paint surfaces with brushes, spray guns, or paint rollers, and simulates wood grain, marble, brick, or tile effects.
  • Applies paint with cloth, brush, sponge, or fingers to create special effects.
  • Erects scaffolding, sets up ladders or operates powered lift equipment to perform tasks above ground level.
  • Washes surfaces prior to painting with mildew remover.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and estimates time and materials for assigned tasks.
  • Repairs plaster and lathe, walls and ceilings, and installs and dismantles permanent and temporary exhibits.
  • Applies joint compound and tape to dry wall to achieve a finished wall surface.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Five (5) years of related experience, with a certificate from a college or technical school a plus.
  • High school diploma or GED required, with paint training from a technical school a plus.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Able to work nights, holidays, and weekends as needed.
  • Languages: ability to read and interpret documents, write routine reports, and speak effectively before groups of employees.
  • Mathematical: ability to calculate figures and amounts, apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning: ability to interpret instructions, solve practical problems, and deal with concrete variables.
  • Physical: ability to stand, walk, reach, lift, and move up to 50 pounds, with specific vision abilities required.
  • Work Environment: frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, toxic or caustic chemicals, outside weather conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
