Position Overview: The Accounting Technician role is an entry-level opportunity focused on administrative tasks, customer service, and support for customer accounts within the Finance & Business Services Department.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable and receivable.
  • Act as the primary contact for both internal and external clients.
  • Perform a variety of accounting, administrative, and clerical tasks related to financial reporting.
  • Handle data entry for daily transactions and adjustments from source documents into the financial system.
  • Resolve customer inquiries and concerns through various communication channels.
  • Calculate fees, fines, and assessments as mandated by applicable laws.
  • Serve as the City’s cashier, managing monetary transactions and reconciling receipts.
  • Prepare and reconcile subsidiary journals and ensure accurate postings to the general ledger.
  • Generate periodic financial reports and assist in the preparation of annual financial statements.
  • Provide customer service by greeting visitors and offering assistance in a professional manner.
  • Maintain the general ledger by creating and reviewing journal entries and reconciling accounts.
  • Support unit staff with technical assistance as needed.
  • Process incoming and returned mail efficiently.
  • Prepare miscellaneous documents such as invoices and account statements.
  • Assist other Accounting Technicians as required.

Knowledge and Skills: Candidates should possess knowledge of financial policies, regulations, and basic bookkeeping practices. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with accounts receivable and payable functions are essential. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary for effective interaction with customers.

Qualifications: A high school diploma or GED is required, along with three years of experience in customer service and office skills. Two years of bookkeeping and accounting experience, preferably in a governmental setting, is also necessary. An Associate's Degree in a related field may substitute for some experience.

Working Conditions: The position is primarily indoors with minimal safety concerns, although interaction with upset customers may occur.
