Mammography Technologist

Overview
The Mammography Technologist is responsible for conducting radiological examinations and mammographic imaging procedures aimed at diagnostic evaluation. This role includes providing on-call and callback coverage as necessary.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze patient medical records before each mammogram to gather and document essential identifying information for the procedure and patient files. Demonstrates proficiency and maintains the necessary skills to deliver care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate techniques for each patient study based on individual circumstances. Prepare and manage equipment and supplies required for each examination, exercising sound judgment in choosing the correct equipment and computer settings.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, explaining the purpose and procedures of the examination in a compassionate and sensitive manner prior to the initiation of testing.
  • Execute various mammographic imaging procedures as prescribed by physicians, adhering to patient care policies and protocols, while considering risk management, infection control, patient safety, and departmental operations. * Implement proper aseptic techniques and universal precautions as per established procedures. * Position and secure patients appropriately. Instruct patients on procedures as necessary. * Conduct procedures (mammograms, breast biopsies, etc.) utilizing a range of radiographic and auxiliary equipment, including mammographic, ultrasound, and stereotactic breast biopsy machines to achieve desired imaging results. * Monitor patient conditions and equipment functionality throughout the procedure. * Document and prepare mammogram images for physician interpretation and long-term storage in accordance with established standards. * Identify and rectify technical errors to ensure clarity and accuracy of scans/images. * Uphold radiation safety standards to protect staff and patients. * Ensure precise documentation of all procedures, including proper ordering, charging, and data entry.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of care in line with established standards and clinical priorities (assessment, mammogram procedure, and patient responses).
  • Collaborate effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff in a courteous manner, adhering to iRESPECT standards to enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes.
  • Safeguard confidentiality regarding patient and departmental information, complying with HIPAA and organizational policies.
  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations and alert the necessary personnel.
  • Keep accurate departmental records, reports, and files, utilizing the patient computer system for data entry and retrieval.
  • Support radiology and other medical staff by providing clinical assistance as needed. Participate in the orientation and supervision of new staff and students during their training.
  • Engage in quality and performance improvement initiatives, collecting data to monitor performance and enhance service quality.
  • Complete required ongoing training and education, including department-specific requirements. Address issues and opportunities for improvement in the work environment and participate in unit-based performance improvement activities.
  • Assist in the maintenance and care of equipment and the effective use of supplies, reporting any equipment malfunctions to supervisors.
  • Ensure a clean, organized, and safe environment for patients and staff. Prepare or clean patient areas by changing linens, stocking supplies, and sanitizing surfaces and equipment. Adhere to established policies regarding compliance, quality improvement, safety, and infection control.

Qualifications
  • Graduate of an AMA accredited radiology technology program.
  • Qualified by education, training, or experience to work with adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patient populations as required by specialty assignments.
  • Additional training may be necessary based on assignment.
  • ARRT certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists required upon hire.
  • CMT certification as a Certified Mammography Technologist must be obtained within one year.
  • TN State Licensure as an X-Ray Operator must be acquired within one year.
  • CPR certification or Basic Life Support certification required upon hire.
  • Minimum of six months of experience in Radiology Technology.
