Role Summary:

The Senior Accountant is integral to maintaining the precision and reliability of financial transactions, reporting, and compliance efforts. Collaborating closely with the Finance team, this role oversees various accounting functions, including general ledger management, financial analysis, budgeting, and audit preparation. Key responsibilities encompass the preparation of accurate financial statements, supervision of general accounting operations, and ensuring alignment of all financial transactions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily bank deposits and credit card contributions.
  • Prepare journal entries to document revenue from governmental and private entities.
  • Support the Senior Director, Accounting in executing bi-weekly payroll functions accurately and promptly, including payroll data analysis and posting of payroll journal entries.
  • Compile monthly closing entries and conduct various account analyses.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reconciliations for balance sheet general ledger accounts.
  • Conduct monthly bank account reconciliations.
  • Maintain the fixed assets register and account for depreciation.
  • Oversee the schedule for temporarily restricted net assets.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly financial statements.
  • Collaborate with grants management personnel to ensure timely and accurate submission of expense reports.
  • Generate standard and ad hoc management and departmental budget reports.
  • Assist in the development of budgets and forecasts.
  • Support year-end closing and the annual audit process.
  • Contribute to the preparation of the annual Form 990 Return.
  • Provide backup support for accounts payable functions as needed.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting is required; CPA designation is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in accounting or auditing is necessary.
  • Experience in the nonprofit sector is highly desirable.
  • Proficient in financial software applications, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Familiarity with Great Plains, Financial Edge, and Raiser's Edge is advantageous.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with various management levels.
  • Detail-oriented with a meticulous approach to work.
  • Ability to take initiative and manage non-routine tasks effectively.
  • Strong project management skills with a focus on timely completion.
  • Capacity to work independently with minimal oversight.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced work environment.

Compensation:

  • Salary range: $87,000 - $95,000, based on the candidate's education, skills, and experience relevant to the position.

  • UWNYC currently operates on a Hybrid/In-Person work schedule.
