Job Title: Phlebotomy Technician

Role Summary:

The Phlebotomy Technician is responsible for performing essential clerical and phlebotomy tasks under the supervision of the Lab Office/Phlebotomy Supervisor. This role includes acting as a receptionist, managing various clerical responsibilities, and serving as a registration clerk, where typing skills are essential. The technician will also perform blood draws and specimen processing, contributing to the Histology and Microbiology departments as needed. Daily exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials is a requirement, necessitating adherence to all hospital and laboratory safety protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct blood draws for outpatients promptly to reduce waiting times.
  2. Order tests and manage incoming specimens according to established protocols.
  3. Verify specimen information in the laboratory information system.
  4. Maintain cleanliness and organization in blood collection areas.
  5. Follow strict patient identification procedures to ensure accuracy in specimen labeling.
  6. Perform venipunctures and skin punctures while adhering to aseptic techniques.
  7. Operate laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and barcode printers.
  8. Provide patient instructions for specimen collection based on individual needs.
  9. Assist in Histology tasks as required.
  10. Participate in training new phlebotomists and assess their competency.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma required; coursework in medical terminology or medical assisting is preferred.

Licenses/Certifications: Current Phlebotomy Technician Certification from the State of California is mandatory.

Experience: Minimum of one year in a hospital setting or three years of phlebotomy experience; typing proficiency of at least 20 net words per minute is required.

Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel; strong verbal communication skills are essential for interaction with staff, patients, and physicians.

Professional Attributes: Strong attention to detail for proofreading and document management, ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, and commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality.

This position may also involve additional responsibilities as assigned.
