San Francisco, California, United States University of California Full time

Job Summary

Staff Physicians of the Department of Family and Community Medicine (FCM) at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) are passionate about improving healthcare delivery, particularly for the underserved. They share in the mission to improve health through excellence, innovation, and an antiracist/anti-oppressive framework in patient care, education, research, advocacy, and community empowerment.

Staff Physicians perform clinical responsibilities in the following areas at ZSFG:

  • Family Health Center (FHC): The full scope of primary care services for children, adolescents, adults, elderly, and homebound patients, with special clinic sessions dedicated to women and infants care, minor procedures, substance use disorder treatment, teen and young adult care, family-based HIV care, and comprehensive diabetes and hypertension care.
  • Family Medicine Inpatient Service (FMIS): The Family Medicine Inpatient Service provides acute inpatient care to adults. The team provides care for acute illnesses, as well as complications from chronic diseases. Patients are admitted from the FHC, SFGH Emergency Department, the Primary Care Network Clinics of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (DPH), and the San Francisco Community Consortium Clinics.

Responsibilities may include part-time, as needed fixed or variable schedules consisting of half-day sessions of direct patient care; coaching, mentoring, and administrative responsibilities at the FHC.

Rotations in the FMIS include day and/or swing (evening) attending shifts, including active participation in Inpatient faculty meetings and the following activities:

  • Direct patient care including evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and referral or consultation as appropriate;
  • Consultation and supervision of care provided by residents;
  • Consultation with nursing staff on the assessment and care of patients;
  • Interfacing with the Charge Nurse to discuss and manage operational issues related to patient flow and workflow;
  • Timely and appropriate documentation of services provided to patients to ensure appropriate recognition of your clinical efforts.

Limited Staff Physicians (10-40% variable FTE) are appointed to one-year annual appointments ending June 30th of each year. Appointments are subject to annual renewal. Final job descriptions will be determined at the time of hire.

The Department of Family & Community Medicine (DFCM) is engaged in research, teaching, training, service, and clinical activities located at seven primary UCSF and leased sites in San Francisco (Parnassus, ZSFG, Mission Center Building, Laurel Heights, Mission Hall, Lakeshore, Lakeside) as well as the OSHER center, Women's Health, and the UCSF Primary Care Practices at China Basin and Laurel Village and at various local community, national, and international research/service/educational training and clinical sites.

The Department has affiliated residency programs in Fresno, Salinas, Santa Rosa, Kaiser Vallejo, Santa Rosa, John Muir, and Contra Costa Health Systems.

The Mission of the UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) is to improve health through excellence, innovation, and an antiracist/anti-oppressive framework in patient care, education, research, advocacy, and community empowerment.

We are dedicated to building a just and equitable society, recognizing that health and illness are shaped by the context of people's lives.

DFCM is nationally recognized for our pioneering research programs in primary care and community health.

The DFCM has a large teaching, research, and clinical set of programs and activities based at ZSFG where this position and more than half of all the activities for DFCM are based.

With more than 100,000 patient visits annually to its practices at ZSFG and the UCSF Health System, the Department of Family and Community Medicine delivers full-spectrum family medicine care, including comprehensive primary care for patients of all ages, urgent care, inpatient acute care, and obstetrical services.

FCM serves patients throughout San Francisco's many diverse neighborhoods.

Our commitment to excellence in patient care has been recognized by awards such as the San Francisco Health Plan Excellence in Patient Centered Care Award.
