Position Overview:
The role is designed to provide hands-on technical leadership, advancing our Engineering Modelling capabilities while offering strategic guidance to support the future of the civil nuclear power sector.
Key Responsibilities:As a Principal Scientist, your main responsibilities will include:
- Understanding and fulfilling NNL's EHSS&Q and Assurance objectives.
- Developing a new client base to generate fresh opportunities for the team.
- Assisting the Capability Manager in shaping strategic plans aligned with the evolving UK Nuclear landscape.
- Providing technical leadership and direction to project teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Ensuring compliance with the team's rigorous Quality Assurance standards across all projects.
- Maintaining and enhancing the skills plan for the capability while creating a strategic training roadmap for future opportunities.
- Managing your workload to deliver high-quality technical work within established timeframes and budgets.
- Reviewing and authorizing technical projects undertaken by the team.
- Mentoring and developing the technical skills of junior team members.
- Establishing strong academic connections to bridge research modelling tools with commercial applications.
Essential Qualifications:
- M.Sc/Ph.D in a relevant field such as Science, Mathematics, or Engineering.
- Proven experience in leading technical teams and successfully delivering multiple projects within the nuclear or related industries.
- Comprehensive knowledge in Structural Integrity, including both linear and non-linear assessments, as well as Heat Transfer.
- Familiarity with IAEA Transport Regulations.
- Proficiency in commercial modelling tools like Ansys Mechanical, Ansys APDL, and LS-Dyna.
- Expertise in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, and Mathcad.
- Experience in developing and implementing strategic training plans to enhance team capabilities.
- Extensive experience applying design code requirements to validate mechanical structures through finite element analysis.
- Ability to obtain SC level security clearance, which includes various background checks and residency requirements.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Experience in Fracture Mechanics, Life Assessment, Damage Tolerance Assessments, and Fitness for Service Assessments using standards like R5, R6, BS7910, or API-579.
- Experience in specifying and verifying seismic design requirements.
- Evidence of peer reviews in the areas of Structural Integrity and Heat Transfer.
- Publications in high-impact journals.
- Familiarity with RWM and GDF disposal criteria.
