Job Overview

UPMC is seeking a dedicated Laboratory Support Technician to enhance our clinical operations. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain comprehensive experience across various laboratory departments through extensive cross-training. The role involves working night shifts from Sunday to Thursday.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responds to telephone inquiries, tracks specimen status, and provides information on report outcomes while directing callers to appropriate resources.
  • Receives, organizes, prepares, and delivers specimens that are ready for testing to designated work areas.
  • Exhibits a customer-focused attitude by demonstrating courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and positivity in all interactions.
  • Conducts routine maintenance on laboratory instruments as per established protocols and records temperature data when necessary.
  • Assists in restocking laboratory supplies to ensure optimal inventory levels and maintains organized storage for room temperature, refrigerated, and frozen items.
  • Prepares and replenishes reagents and consumables for instruments as required and performs quality assurance/quality control procedures as assigned.
  • Supports the storage and retrieval of specimens/slides, monitors pending work lists, and addresses any unprocessed tasks.
  • Ensures cleanliness of work areas, maintains a tidy environment, and keeps glassware free of residue.
  • Prepares specimens for analysis at workstations, including assembling worklists, verifying specimen acceptability, aliquoting samples, and managing specimen loading/unloading on instruments.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • OR an Associate degree (with coursework in biology and chemistry) and at least 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical laboratory.
  • OR certification in Phlebotomy or as a Medical Assistant with 1 year of experience as a Specimen Processor (or equivalent) in a clinical laboratory.
  • OR successful completion of a 50-week U.S. military medical laboratory training program.
  • OR a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in biological or clinical laboratory science.
  • OR current enrollment in a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) program or equivalent training, with at least 3 years of college credits completed.

Certifications and Clearances:
Preferred: Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certification from ASCP or equivalent.

A valid driver's license may be required based on departmental needs.
