The Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit (TSICU) is a specialized 16-bed unit dedicated to the management of critically ill trauma, surgical, and neurological patients. Each day presents a diverse array of cases, from traumatic injuries to complex surgical conditions. Our nursing staff is trained to recognize subtle changes in patient conditions and is committed to ensuring timely interventions. We prioritize patient advocacy and work collaboratively across various disciplines to address patient needs. Our governance team, comprised of dedicated staff members, actively engages in implementing best practices to guarantee optimal patient care. We foster a culture of teamwork and value opportunities to mentor and share knowledge with students.
Responsibilities
Coordinates and directs high-quality, compassionate care by upholding professional nursing standards and fostering positive therapeutic relationships with patients and their families. Provides leadership to the nursing team by clearly communicating and delegating care standards, supervising team members, and recognizing their contributions. Oversees the work of LPNs, PCAs, ED Techs, and other support staff.
- Conducts comprehensive assessments of each assigned patient upon admission and continuously thereafter, considering physical, psychological, social, spiritual, and cultural factors, as well as pain management, nutritional needs, and discharge planning.
- Develops, delivers, and documents educational materials for patients and their significant others, tailored to their physical, behavioral, psychological, and developmental needs while identifying any barriers to learning.
- Regularly evaluates patient care and collaborates with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
- Delegates nursing responsibilities to team members based on patient needs and team capabilities.
- Implements safety protocols during care delivery and meticulously documents observations, interventions, and modifications to care plans.
- Participates in transition rounds, care planning, and team shift reports.
- Contributes to performance improvement initiatives by participating in relevant teams and supporting necessary changes for enhancement.
- Completes initial and annual competency assessments as required for each job classification.
- Maintains performance, patient satisfaction, employee satisfaction, and financial metrics as outlined in performance evaluations.
- Adheres to compliance requirements as detailed in the Employee Handbook.
- Upholds DCH Behavioral Standards by fostering positive relationships with patients, families, colleagues, and oneself.
- Utilizes electronic communication, time management software, and learning management systems as necessary.
- Complies with all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Current RN licensure in Alabama is required. An Associate degree in Nursing is mandatory. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is essential. Professional Nursing Certification is preferred. Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English is required.
