The role of the Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department is pivotal in delivering high-quality patient care in a fast-paced environment. The nurse will be responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care in alignment with established protocols and standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough triage assessments to determine the urgency of patient needs, including physical, infectious, and mental health evaluations.
- Utilize the Emergency Severity Index effectively to prioritize patient care.
- Gather comprehensive patient histories and relevant family medical histories.
- Assess allergies and current medications to ensure safe treatment.
- Measure vital signs including height, weight, temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure.
- Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms accurately.
- Perform blood draws, wound care, and administer medications and intravenous therapies as prescribed.
- Implement infection control measures in accordance with best practices.
- Document all care provided and the patient's response in the medical record.
- Verify and execute physician orders accurately.
- Communicate critical patient information to the Charge Nurse and/or Physician as necessary.
- Reassess and adjust care plans based on ongoing evaluations of patient conditions.
- Maintain knowledge of emergency medications and their administration protocols.
- Educate patients and families about medications, therapies, and necessary procedures.
- Operate emergency medical equipment including defibrillators and cardiac monitors.
- Provide care for patients with specialized medical devices as needed.
- Contribute to discharge planning processes.
- Demonstrate the ability to titrate medications as required.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited nursing program recognized by the relevant state authority.
- A minimum of three years of experience in an Emergency Room or Major Trauma setting is required.
- CEN certification is preferred; candidates with CCRN certification and relevant ED experience will also be considered.
- Current nursing license in at least one U.S. state or territory is mandatory.
- Certification in BLS/CPR and ACLS from an accredited provider is required.
