New York, New York, United States Steven Winter Associates Full time
Job Overview

Position Summary: Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) is seeking an entry-level Passive House Compliance Specialist to contribute to our High Performance Building Solutions (HPBS) division. This position involves evaluating and confirming that projects are designed or constructed to adhere to the Passive House (PH) standards. You will collaborate with construction teams, architects, and engineers to ensure adherence to these standards. Ideal candidates should possess a keen interest in sustainable construction practices, a commitment to developing expertise in PH certification, and strong communication abilities for both field assessments and reporting progress.

Compensation: The anticipated annual salary range for this role is $65,000 - $75,000 based on a standard 40-hour work week. The final salary will be determined based on verified job-related skills and experience.

Key Responsibilities:

The position requires a proactive individual capable of working independently as well as part of a team.

  • Assist in verifying Passive House projects to ensure they meet the Passive House standards, including site observations, performance assessments, and review of documentation.
  • Conduct on-site evaluations to determine construction quality and compliance with Passive House guidelines, paying close attention to detail. Document findings and suggest corrective measures as necessary.
  • Examine project documentation, including architectural drawings and specifications, for compliance with Passive House standards.
  • Perform basic calculations and measurements as required.
  • Prepare reports and documentation necessary for PH certification.
  • Work collaboratively with project teams, architects, engineers, and contractors to resolve any issues related to Passive House certification and provide technical assistance.
  • Engage in training sessions and professional development opportunities to remain updated on Passive House standards, methodologies, and best practices.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, sustainable construction management, or a related field with a focus on building systems.
  • Relevant coursework, internships, academic projects, or certifications in sustainable building practices and energy efficiency are beneficial.
  • 0-2 years of experience with building projects in North America.
  • Strong understanding of energy consumption in buildings.
  • Proficient in Excel and familiar with the MS Office Suite.
  • Experience with blower door testing, duct blaster, and infrared camera equipment is advantageous.
Preferred Knowledge:
  • Experience with Passive House projects is a plus.
  • Prior experience as a HERS Rater, LEED Homes Green Rater, or NGBS Green Verifier, or other credentials demonstrating expertise in high-performance building strategies.
  • Willingness to obtain relevant certifications through PHI, PHIUS, and/or ENERGY STAR Multifamily New Construction within the first year of employment.
Bonus Skills/Certifications:
  • Experience in field verification of buildings, particularly for green certifications or code compliance is a plus.
Physical Demands:

This role requires the employee to sit regularly and frequently walk; use hands for handling or feeling; reach with hands and arms; and communicate verbally. The employee will often need to stand at project sites and may be required to lift or move objects weighing up to 35 pounds.

Occasional long days on construction sites for performance testing may be physically demanding. Specific vision abilities required for this role include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

Travel Requirements:

Occasional overnight travel may be necessary (less than 10%). Frequent local field visits will be required.

Working Environment:

This position involves a mix of office and fieldwork, with most responsibilities conducted in a construction/field environment, necessitating visits to project sites for observation and training.
