Position Overview

The Oncology Registered Nurse in the Duke Cancer Center Clinic is a skilled RN with specialized knowledge in oncology. This role involves providing personalized support to patients, families, and caregivers, assisting them in navigating the healthcare system. Utilizing the nursing process, the clinic nurse delivers education and resources to promote informed decision-making and ensure timely access to quality health and psychosocial care throughout the cancer care continuum for patients in various oncology specialties.

The RN will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, collaborating with providers, residents, fellows, and other clinical staff. Responsibilities include:
  • Conducting comprehensive assessments and providing focused education
  • Facilitating care transitions through diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care
  • Coordinating patient-centered care through effective communication with the cancer care team

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team, including nurse triage and schedulers
  • Assist in obtaining necessary medical records and documentation for patient evaluations
  • Ensure all patients have appropriate orders during clinic visits
  • Coordinate outside labs and scans with other healthcare providers
  • Provide medication teaching and symptom management education
  • Assist with scheduling follow-up appointments and coordinating chemotherapy
  • Perform triage for patient inquiries that do not require immediate provider response
  • Support patients with disease-specific procedures and therapies

Qualifications:
  • Education: BSN or ADN (must enroll in a BSN program within 2 years of hire)
  • Preferred: 1 year of oncology experience and Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification

Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills in both oral and written English
  • Basic computer proficiency, including electronic health record navigation
  • Minimum of 12 months of relevant clinical experience

Licensure and Certifications:
  • Current RN licensure in North Carolina (or compact license with NC license obtained within 90 days)
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association
  • Encouraged to obtain OCN certification within 2 years of hire
