Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Structural Fitter to join our team at WhatJobs. As a key member of our fabrication team, you will be responsible for performing structural fitting functions with a focus on quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform structural fitter assignments as assigned, ensuring adherence to customer specifications and company standards.
  • Work safely and maintain a safe working environment, reporting any safety and/or structural issues to the foreman or supervisor as warranted.
  • Lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated structural steel plate according to customer specifications and direction from the foreman/supervisor.
  • Move parts into position, manually, by hoist or crane, and align parts using jacks, etc.
  • Remove high spots and cut bevels using hand files, portable grinders, and/or cutting torch, and provide directions to the welder to build up low spots or short pieces.
  • Tack weld as necessary, and consult with the foreman or supervisor regarding installation or repair problems, sequence of operations, and time required to complete repair and/or installation.
  • Attend safety meetings as required, and maintain a safe working environment.

Requirements:

  • Minimum one year experience as a structural fitter (shipyard experience preferred, but not required).
  • Ability to perform simple paperwork as required for filling out forms and logs.
  • Mandatory drug testing prior to employment, and subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol tests during employment.
  • Ability to communicate and take directions from the foreman and supervisor.
  • Good judgment skills, and a high-level work initiative.
  • Ability to work independently, without direct supervision.
  • Ability to meet strict attendance requirements.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

  • Barge chemical environment.
  • Prolonged kneeling, standing, walking, twisting, climbing, and the ability to lift and carry in excess of 120 lbs, assisted.
  • Ability to work in varied conditions (i.e., heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, etc.), inside and outside.
  • Able to work in confined space, heights, and operate equipment efficiently and safely.
