Job Summary

Durham County Government is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Detention Officer. As a Detention Officer, you will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of our detention facility, ensuring the well-being of inmates, and upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process inmates into custody, conduct searches, and manage personal property
  • Patrol assigned areas to ensure security and maintain order
  • Supervise inmates during meals, exercise, work, recreation, and personal hygiene activities
  • Attend to special needs of prisoners and resolve individual problems
  • Escort and transport inmates as required
  • Secure cell doors to prevent conflicts between inmates
  • Prepare routine records on inmates and perform general clerical duties
  • Ensure the care and maintenance of quarters, work, and recreational equipment used by inmates
  • Arrange visits, inspect items brought into the jail, and check incoming and outgoing mail
Requirements
  • Must be at least 20 years old
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a North Carolina driver's license
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor
  • Must pass a reading comprehension exam and a physical ability/readiness test
  • Must live within 50 miles of downtown Durham (or willing to relocate upon being hired)
Special Requirements
  • Must successfully complete the Detention Officer Certification Course (DOCC) within one (1) year of employment
Working Conditions

The Detention Officer will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to work in a confined area, maintain discipline and order among inmates, and use sound judgment in routine and emergency situations is essential.

Physical Demands

The Detention Officer will perform medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects, exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
