Sports Reporter Job Description

APG - The Daily Times is seeking a dynamic and career-oriented Reporter/Staff Writer to join our award-winning Sports Team. The ideal candidate will have a desire to tell the story in multiple mediums that include visual and digital components, as well as personal stories that provide context to the game and season.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with other sports reporters and editors to write features, previews, game stories, and analysis for multiple sports.
  • Contribute to the newsroom's efforts to effectively cover and inform the community.
  • Write articles that demonstrate exceptional interviewing and organizational skills, as well as a tenacity and genuine curiosity.
  • Work a full-time schedule with nighttime coverage and some weekend assignments on a seasonal schedule.

Requirements:

  • Perform job duties and conduct self in accordance with the company's core values.
  • Take effective notes and be able to draft an organized article from those notes.
  • Have an excellent grasp of interviewing and writing techniques, as well as a demonstrated knowledge of how multimedia enhances reporting.
  • Initiate and nurture effective, professional relationships with sources in the community.
  • Able to accept instruction and editing direction from editors.
  • Strong eye for details.
  • Working level understanding and utilization of AP Style and inverse pyramid structure.
  • Reliable transportation and smartphone.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience writing enterprise and long-form content, as well as telling personal stories.
  • Experience covering news on social media platforms.
  • Experience with photography and/or video.
