Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY This role encompasses physical labor and services for the City of Sunrise. The individual in this position engages in routine physical tasks related to the construction, upkeep, and repair of municipal structures, roadways, drainage systems, water pipelines, and various installations. Responsibilities also include landscaping duties such as spraying vegetation, trimming trees, assisting with concrete tasks, installing signage, erecting barriers, excavating, leveling surfaces, and loading/unloading vehicles. Additionally, this position involves cleaning walkways, collecting litter and debris, and washing vehicles.

Key Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES

Executes unskilled and semi-skilled tasks associated with the maintenance and repair of stormwater and wastewater systems. Operates maintenance machinery and power tools, including small tractors, rotary brush trimmers, weed eaters, mowers, edgers, and blowers, while ensuring that hand tools and assigned equipment are maintained in optimal condition. Manages swales and open ditches as necessary to ensure effective system functionality. Addresses public inquiries courteously, providing information relevant to the area of responsibility or directing them to a supervisor as needed. Operates and maintains a designated vehicle, including monitoring fuel and oil levels and reporting any required repairs. Responsible for the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the areas surrounding stormwater facilities. Loads and transports equipment, materials, pumps, and other supplies in preparation for tasks. Investigates public complaints and communicates action plans to municipal officials and the community. Keeps a log of activities related to wastewater and stormwater operations. Participates in regular meetings where work assignments are delegated. Engages in emergency preparedness activities in the event of natural or man-made disasters, serving as essential personnel before, during, and after relief and cleanup operations. Remains on-call for emergency situations concerning wastewater and stormwater matters. Adheres to general safety protocols while performing daily tasks, including the use of protective gear such as eye and face protection, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed boots, and other necessary equipment based on the job requirements. Fosters a culture of safety within the organization. Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION
Completion of an accredited high school program or possession of a GED. PROOF OF HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPLETED EDUCATION MUST BE SUBMITTED AS AN ATTACHMENT WITH APPLICATION. (Applications without attached proof of education will not be processed for consideration.) EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
A minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience in Building Maintenance or Public Works (Grounds, Streets, and/or Stormwater) maintenance and/or repair functions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record; CDL preferred. Must obtain a valid Florida driver's license prior to employment. Ability to acquire an Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic certificate within six months.

Skills and Competencies

Familiarity with minor repair, maintenance, and construction techniques. Awareness of occupational hazards and appropriate safety measures. Knowledge of cleaning agents, methods, and equipment. Understanding of electrical work. Proficiency in the use and maintenance of hand tools and related equipment. Competence in utilizing department software. Skills in caring for lawns, flowers, trees, and shrubs. Ability to comprehend and follow oral and simple written instructions. Capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and the public. Ability to communicate with the public in a friendly and helpful manner. Capacity to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often outdoors in varying weather conditions.
