Job Summary:

The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist supports the Laboratory Section Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager in the operational and technical management of their assigned section(s). They ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the laboratory and act as a resource for problem-solving.

Responsibilities:
  • Assists the Laboratory Section Supervisor and/or Laboratory Manager in managing day-to-day laboratory operations, including problem-solving and real-time workload adjustments.
  • Ensures efficient specimen handling, testing, reporting, and customer service while adhering to laboratory and hospital policies.
  • May serve as acting supervisor and handle all related duties in their absence.
  • Executes all procedures within established turnaround times and conducts proficiency testing with accurate documentation.
  • Prioritizes work effectively, communicates critical values promptly, and ensures adherence to protocols.
  • Handles Medical Laboratory Scientist tasks during peak periods and staff absences, and performs technical duties of the supervisor as needed.
  • Manages supplies responsibly to prevent wastage, oversees inventory, and orders necessary items to maintain adequate stock.
  • Maintains reagent logs, coordinates instrument service, and acts as the liaison for vendors.
  • Assigns daily tasks, trains and evaluates staff, and provides feedback for performance appraisals.
  • Conducts competency assessments and participates in personnel selection and peer interviews.
  • Follows Infection Control and Safety protocols, maintains Hazardous Chemical logs, and ensures work areas are disinfected.
  • Manages staff scheduling and coverage, addressing vacancies in the supervisor's absence.
  • Reviews regulatory standards and addresses non-compliance issues.
  • Oversees proficiency testing, reviews results, and investigates unsuccessful tests.
  • Monitors equipment performance and assists in procedure development and validation.
  • Performs statistical analysis, linearity studies, calibrations, and patient correlations.
  • Reviews patient results, monitors QC, and manages reagent lot rollovers.
  • Provides recommendations for corrective actions and oversees QC reporting.
Requirements:
  • Three years of relevant experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent position in a high-complexity laboratory.
  • Preferred five years of relevant experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician or equivalent position in a high-complexity laboratory.
  • Credential Certification related to the position, if applicable.
