Overview:
The Medical Assistant II - Regional Support at Akron Children's Hospital is responsible for delivering proficient clinical and administrative assistance across various ACHP locations within a designated area on a rotating schedule. This role involves supporting patient care under the guidance of a healthcare Provider and/or licensed Nurse, as well as contributing to training initiatives within the defined scope of practice.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare patients for examinations, including taking and documenting vital signs, performing phlebotomy when necessary, and administering medications as instructed by Providers in accordance with established protocols.
- Gather and document data that aids in assessing and evaluating the individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge planning, under the supervision of a Licensed Nurse.
- Collect, process, and submit laboratory specimens following standard operating procedures.
- Effectively communicate patient findings and relevant information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse, adhering to appropriate documentation practices.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care within the EPIC electronic health record system.
- Conduct point-of-service activities such as scheduling appointments, preparing for visits, collecting co-payments, and tracking patient flow as required.
- Perform clinical tasks specific to the department, including point-of-care testing, hearing and vision screenings, and other designated procedures.
- Execute routine administrative duties such as faxing, copying, and filing as necessary.
- Maintain cleanliness, stock supplies, and prepare examination rooms for patient use.
- Foster and sustain positive relationships with patients, families, and team members.
- Address work-related issues with minimal guidance from the appropriate supervisory structure.
- Actively engage in departmental process improvement initiatives.
- Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to ensure a secure environment for patients, families, and staff.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Technical Skills:
- Preferred experience in phlebotomy.
- Required knowledge of medical terminology.
- Preferred background in a healthcare setting.
- Required proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar applications.
- Preferred experience with electronic medical records (e.g., EPIC) or comparable systems.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is essential.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is required.
- Medical Assistant certification is preferred.
- A minimum of six months of relevant experience is required.
- No supervisory experience is necessary.
