Overview:

The Medical Assistant II - Regional Support at Akron Children's Hospital is responsible for delivering proficient clinical and administrative assistance across various ACHP locations within a designated area on a rotating schedule. This role involves supporting patient care under the guidance of a healthcare Provider and/or licensed Nurse, as well as contributing to training initiatives within the defined scope of practice.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare patients for examinations, including taking and documenting vital signs, performing phlebotomy when necessary, and administering medications as instructed by Providers in accordance with established protocols.
  2. Gather and document data that aids in assessing and evaluating the individualized care and needs of assigned patients, including discharge planning, under the supervision of a Licensed Nurse.
  3. Collect, process, and submit laboratory specimens following standard operating procedures.
  4. Effectively communicate patient findings and relevant information to the Provider and/or Licensed Nurse, adhering to appropriate documentation practices.
  5. Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care within the EPIC electronic health record system.
  6. Conduct point-of-service activities such as scheduling appointments, preparing for visits, collecting co-payments, and tracking patient flow as required.
  7. Perform clinical tasks specific to the department, including point-of-care testing, hearing and vision screenings, and other designated procedures.
  8. Execute routine administrative duties such as faxing, copying, and filing as necessary.
  9. Maintain cleanliness, stock supplies, and prepare examination rooms for patient use.
  10. Foster and sustain positive relationships with patients, families, and team members.
  11. Address work-related issues with minimal guidance from the appropriate supervisory structure.
  12. Actively engage in departmental process improvement initiatives.
  13. Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to ensure a secure environment for patients, families, and staff.
  14. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Technical Skills:

  1. Preferred experience in phlebotomy.
  2. Required knowledge of medical terminology.
  3. Preferred background in a healthcare setting.
  4. Required proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar applications.
  5. Preferred experience with electronic medical records (e.g., EPIC) or comparable systems.

Education and Experience:

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent is mandatory.
  2. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program, EMT Program, or Paramedic Program is essential.
  3. Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is required.
  4. Medical Assistant certification is preferred.
  5. A minimum of six months of relevant experience is required.
  6. No supervisory experience is necessary.
