POSITION OVERVIEW

This role provides assistance to technical laboratory personnel and may involve the collection, receipt, and processing of biological specimens within the department. Responsibilities include preparing samples for analytical testing and may involve performing waived and/or limited moderate complexity testing, contingent upon meeting CLIA minimum requirements or as authorized by the CLIA Medical Director.

This position reports to departmental leadership and receives guidance from senior technical staff.
All tasks are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation standards, as well as applicable professional norms.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • May process and prepare patient samples as necessary, which includes: 1) specimen collection, ensuring accurate patient and specimen identification and integrity 2) general laboratory specimen processing and 3) referral laboratory processing. May conduct waived and moderate complexity testing under direct supervision while adhering to performance standards and knowledge levels established for the approved testing. Demonstrates proficiency in the computer systems utilized in the department. Tracks and resolves missing specimens while monitoring pending lists. Conducts maintenance activities on laboratory equipment as directed. Maintains awareness and compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory requirements pertinent to their responsibilities.

Emphasizes quality by ensuring that all work performed is precise, complete, and within the time frames set by the department.

Meets departmental standards for productivity and quality.

May conduct quality control for testing as directed by technical staff, engage in basic troubleshooting, and communicate technical issues to technical personnel.

Participates in identifying and documenting occurrences that deviate from established procedures.

Adheres to established methods and practices and demonstrates basic problem-solving skills related to QC, testing, and computer issues while maintaining acceptable specimen rejection rates, if applicable.

Contributes to departmental financial responsibilities through the prudent use of supplies and materials and assists with inventory management. Engages in departmental initiatives aimed at reducing costs and enhancing service.

Performs various support duties as defined by the department, which may include phlebotomy and training. May assist in updating training documents and procedures.

Communicates courteously, professionally, effectively, and accurately with both internal and external customers. Demonstrates skills for basic computer inquiries and problem-solving, as well as the use of communication equipment. Exhibits strong verbal and written communication skills. Fosters positive communications that promote teamwork. Attendance and participation in staff meetings are expected.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or equivalent, and must be at least 18 years old if performing phlebotomy.

Progression through career ladder II-IV is contingent upon completion of career ladder requirements.

This position may require DHS Fingerprinting Certification or the ability to obtain such certification.


Depending on department/location, candidates must possess a valid state driver's license in the state of employment and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.

Phlebotomy/CLA certification as defined by state regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior clinical laboratory experience.

Successful completion of a laboratory assistant program.

Basic understanding of specimen requirements and handling.

Familiarity with medical terminology.

Additional related education and/or experience.
