Respiratory Care Internship Opportunity

UPMC Shadyside is seeking Respiratory Care Interns to support their Respiratory Care Services department on a casual basis. This opportunity is ideal for students looking to gain clinical experience and knowledge prior to completing their education in a CoARC approved Respiratory Care program.

Responsibilities:
  • Administer diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of Respiratory Care in the general medical/surgical units, observing all necessary precautions to prevent adverse effects.
  • Care for equipment, use supplies and utilities economically, and maintain cleanliness in the department and work areas.
  • Participate in clinical research projects as required.
  • Maintain accurate records according to department standards.
  • Communicate with healthcare personnel regarding patient care.
  • Perform chest physiotherapy, assist in patient transport, and administer therapeutic gases as prescribed.
  • Document interactions with and care given to patients in the medical record and/or hospital information system.
  • Perform arterial punctures, analyze samples, and maintain asepsis and quality according to department standards.
  • Administer IPPB therapy, perform simple bedside pulmonary function testing, and calculate results.
  • Transport and change respiratory equipment, maintain associated records, and clean, disinfect, and/or sterilize equipment.
  • Complete mandatory and hospital competencies, exhibit service excellence, and utilize Customer Relations principles.
  • Prepare and administer humidification and nebulization therapy, evaluate therapy objectives, and provide equipment for therapy.
  • Participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, perform incentive spirometry, and prepare and administer aerosolized drugs and drug mixtures as prescribed.
  • Ensure patient charges are entered daily and perform resting, titration, exercise, and nocturnal oximetry studies.
  • Replace oxygen and other compressed gas cylinders used for patient care and monitor and change cylinder banks when indicated.
Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in a CoARC approved school of Respiratory Care.
  • Completed one semester of clinical rotations at a CoARC approved school of Respiratory Care.
  • Act 34 clearance.
  • Certified in CPR.
