Job Objectives:
Accountable for operating the bus, ensuring order, applying appropriate discipline, and safeguarding the safety and well-being of all passengers. Facilitate secure transportation of students on district-owned school buses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections of district vehicles to adhere to all regulations set forth by the US Department of Transportation, Colorado Department of Education, and District 8.
  • Handles all emergency procedures, including evacuations (via rear exit, window exit, and roof exit as necessary). Responds to medical emergencies such as seizures and suctioning.
  • Responsible for driving all district vehicles designated for student transportation.
  • Provides guidance and direction to passengers as needed. Manages student behavior and maintains discipline on the bus.
  • Handles administrative tasks including but not limited to: creating seating charts, documenting student behavior, maintaining records, and logging maintenance issues, work hours, and incident reports.
  • Responsible for fueling and cleaning transportation vehicles.
  • Assists as a bus aide, which includes securing special needs and preschool riders in wheelchairs, safety vests, car seats, and other necessary equipment. Aids students in boarding and exiting the bus, including maneuvering wheelchairs on and off lifts.
  • Utilizes a two-way radio to communicate with the base station regarding special circumstances as needed.

Performance Expectations:

  • Familiarity with relevant laws, rules, policies, and procedures governing vehicle and school transportation operations.
  • Capability to operate all district transportation vehicles.
  • Ability to apply and wear provided safety equipment.
  • Competence to perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections independently.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others and work as part of a team.

Physical Requirements:
The role involves operating a school bus. Typical tasks require the ability to climb stairs, crawl, bend, kneel, and reach. Occasionally required to lift and drag items weighing up to 60 lbs. Pushing, pulling, and carrying items up to 50 lbs. on an occasional basis, and lifting items overhead up to 20 lbs. Must be capable of holding, grasping, and turning objects; using fingers to operate a computer or typewriter; and feeling the shape, size, and temperature of objects.

Must be able to speak clearly, utilize normal or aided vision and hearing, and detect odors.

Must successfully pass the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examination and comply with the USDOT approved substance abuse testing program.

Compensation:
Bus Drivers are compensated according to the Classified Salary Schedule.

  • New hires may receive credit for up to 8 years of relevant experience in similar educational settings.
  • New employees typically start at the lower end of the salary range.

Employment Duration:
Positions available for 185 days per year with a 5-hour workday.
