Position Overview:
We are in search of a skilled engineer to take on the role of Fungal Bioprocess Specialist within our Process Development team. This position will serve as a critical link between small-scale laboratory findings and large-scale production implementation. The Fungal Bioprocess Specialist will collaborate with engineering and mycology teams to evaluate experimental bio-manufacturing methods as they transition from laboratory settings to full-scale production, identify key process control parameters to influence fungal growth, and design and construct growth incubators.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate the conversion of upstream biotechnology concepts from R&D and Mycology teams into reliable, manufacturable, and scalable product solutions.
- Serve as an in-house authority on solid and liquid fungal fermentation bioprocessing techniques to ensure effective technology transfers between R&D and Manufacturing.
- Design and conduct small-scale bioprocess experiments to inform growth parameters such as growth rate, thickness, uniformity, strength, and layer adhesion.
- Contribute bioprocessing knowledge to the design of a well-instrumented and adaptable in-house pilot plant for comprehensive testing of proposed bio-manufacturing process modifications.
- Innovate and assess novel bioprocessing methods within our existing manufacturing framework to enhance overall product quality and yield.
- Conduct standard biological tests on experimental systems with guidance from Quality to gather directional data on growth parameters.
- Collaborate with internal Quality teams to develop new in-process measurement techniques to address quality issues and production inefficiencies.
- Work cross-functionally with product research, R&D, and manufacturing operations teams to evaluate and recommend strategic process enhancements that improve product quality, process reliability, and production efficiency.
- Implement the MycoWay engineering work process to ensure the successful execution of engineering projects across the organization.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or a related field.
- Experience with a diverse range of bio and general manufacturing systems and techniques, including solid-state bioreactors, material handling, mixing systems, and sterilization methods.
- Proven experience in designing and implementing flexible pilot-scale systems, particularly for living biological systems.
- Familiarity with in-process measurement tools and techniques for living products.
- Knowledge of industrial fungal cultivation techniques and processes.
- Experience working in clean environments, including biological safety cabinets and aseptic techniques.
- Working knowledge of common biological measurement procedures, including CFU counts and microscopy.
- Experience in setting up and executing small-scale experiments following established DOE principles.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent planning and time management abilities, enabling participation in multiple projects.
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Excel; experience with R is a plus.
