Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Veterinary Nurse/Veterinary Technician to join our team in the Small Animal Clinical Sciences' Surgery service at the University of Tennessee. The successful candidate will provide entry-level patient care, facilitate nursing care, and assist with surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide entry-level nursing care in surgery, preparing patients for surgery, monitoring and evaluating hospitalized surgical patients, and circulating in the operating room.
  • Administer prescribed medications, perform and instruct bandage placement and care, and facilitate and perform proper wound drain care and management.
  • Operate the c-arm equipment with knowledge of radiation safety, obtain and submit laboratory samples, and schedule appointments and surgeries.
  • Guide and prepare for procedures, perform surgical instrument cleaning and pack preparation, and have knowledge of the maintenance and care of specialized equipment.
  • Instruct veterinary students and veterinary technician interns in the application of clinical skills, facilitate appointments, and perform client follow-up calls.
  • Answer public inquiries regarding cost and procedure, coordinate with other services for patient care/diagnostics, and coordinate the daily surgery schedule.
  • Attend patient rounds with clinicians and service technicians to communicate the needs and status of the patient to other services, monitor the service emails and facsimiles received, and relay these communications to the veterinarian.
  • Enter charges and approve patient bills, create cost estimates for clients, and become familiar with procedures for repair and recovery for equipment.
  • Oversee ward stocking and including items supplied for wound management, attend staff, service, and departmental meetings, and participate in online training required by the department and university.
  • Interview candidates for job positions and surgical residencies, serve on university departmental and college committees, and serve as laser safety officer.
Requirements
  • Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)-accredited program in Veterinary Technology with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
  • Must obtain a license to practice in Tennessee within the first year of employment.
  • Future graduates will be considered if degree is obtained prior to hire date.
  • Relevant additional experience preferred.
