Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

A Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is a vital support person who provides basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers participating in the WIC program.
Key Responsibilities- Provide breastfeeding promotion, support, and information to WIC clients through phone calls or in-person visits at the WIC clinic.
- Build a caseload of WIC clients and make regular contacts throughout their breastfeeding experience.
- Identify complex breastfeeding issues and refer them to the Breastfeeding Coordinator or other healthcare providers as needed.
- Be available outside regular working hours to support WIC breastfeeding mothers experiencing difficulties.
- Teach clients about breast pump assembly, use, and maintenance, as well as expression and storage of human milk.
- Document contacts with mothers and report activities to the Breastfeeding Coordinator.
- Maintain confidentiality and respect for each client's information.
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- Experience working with WIC clients preferred.
- Good communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Flexibility to work varying hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Have breastfed at least one baby for a minimum of six months.
- Be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and committed to helping other mothers.
- Be familiar with WIC and its services.
- Be fluent in the language of the majority of clients served.
- Be a member of the community served.
