Job Overview

Avegant is seeking a highly motivated Senior Optical Engineer to contribute to the development of our cutting-edge near-eye display technology. The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of experience in a design and production environment and will be responsible for working with technical team members to develop and evaluate new optical components and assembly concepts for near-eye display systems.

This is a unique opportunity to be a part of a revolutionary consumer product from implementation of design through initial production and beyond. The successful candidate will work closely with our mechanical engineering, optical, and industrial design teams to bring this innovative technology to market.

Responsibilities
  • Support product development with imaging system optical designs, component selection, and tolerance analysis
  • Work with suppliers on custom, semi-custom component selection, specification, and qualification
  • Assembly and evaluation of prototype assemblies and light sources – specifically evaluating optical characteristics, image quality (MTF), light polarization measurement, thermal characteristics
  • Work with suppliers to define, specify optical coatings and evaluate coating performance on prototype components
  • Maintain detailed laboratory notes of the results of various evaluation experiments
  • Provide analysis of results of experiments for a few-to-many test samples
  • Evaluate new test/process equipment and tools and make recommendations to management
  • Maintain database of laboratory test results that can be accessed for comparison of data from various evaluation samples
  • Provide documentation of prototype assembly procedures that can be used for subsequent manufacturing process documentation
  • Design custom optical system test fixtures for volume manufacturing calibration and test
  • Provide training in laboratory procedures and protocols for new employees and occasional part-time personnel supporting Optical design activities. Provide training in the proper handling, care, and cleaning of optical components
  • Support development efforts to bring prototype optical designs into high-volume, low-cost manufacturing
  • Support continuous improvement efforts for products, both in terms of performance and cost/yield
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in optical engineering or similar; Master's degree preferred
  • 5 – 10 years work experience in optical design, with 5 – 10 years experience in design of imaging systems, especially for image projection
  • Design experience with illumination systems for imaging devices highly desirable
  • Familiarity with optical design SW such as Zemax and FRED
  • Experience with Solidworks a plus
  • Experience with optical system assembly methods and materials
  • Familiarity with VIS Spectrum analyzers and SW, VIS Camera systems and image capture SW
  • Experience with optical lab testing of imaging systems and analysis of image quality and color accuracy
  • Experience with laboratory data collection and equipment/test automation
  • Familiarity with common data analysis software tools such as Microsoft Excel and graphing and statistical analysis software
  • Experience with design for high-volume manufacturing and design for test, and design for automation
  • Experience with the transfer of new designs and processes to manufacturing
  • Knowledge of standard procedures for the care and handling of optical components and devices
  • 6+ years of experience with assembly and evaluation of imaging and illumination optical systems
