Program Focus:
The HUD-VASH Program is a collaborative initiative aimed at assisting Veterans and their families in overcoming homelessness by providing them with access to permanent housing solutions. This program integrates housing assistance with comprehensive case management and supportive services.
Position Summary:
The Housing Specialist plays a crucial role in identifying appropriate housing solutions for program participants and their families, facilitating their journey towards sustainable and healthy independent living. As a vital member of the service team, the Housing Specialist engages in all phases of client interaction, including assessment, service planning, and delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and secure suitable housing options for participants, including referrals to shelters when necessary.
- Maintain a comprehensive housing database to connect tenants with available apartments.
- Engage with landlords to educate them about the program and the specific needs of participants.
- Conduct inspections of housing options to ensure safety and compliance with standards.
- Work collaboratively with landlords to facilitate housing placements for clients.
Additionally, the Housing Specialist will:
- Develop tailored support systems to address individual housing needs, coordinating move-in activities and rental negotiations.
- Utilize community resources to assist tenants and landlords in resolving potential eviction issues.
- Provide crisis intervention and assistance with permanent housing placements as part of the case management team.
- Assist in conducting comprehensive assessments to gather necessary information for developing Individual Service Plans.
- Coordinate follow-up services with the case management team to ensure ongoing support.
Qualifications:
- Ability to pass a background check, including criminal history and reference verification.
- Current TB screening and immunization records.
- Valid driver's license.
- Bachelor's degree in Social Services or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum one year of experience working with veterans or individuals experiencing homelessness.
Preferred Skills:
- Bilingual proficiency in Spanish.
- Familiarity with HMIS (Homeless Management Information System).
