Position Overview
This role is essential in delivering clinical and technical assistance, supporting nursing and medical personnel to ensure optimal patient care. The incumbent will engage in clerical, communication, and various other tasks to promote the smooth operation of the Care Center services. Responsibilities are executed in accordance with the standards defined in the competency-based evaluation tool. The individual in this role will align with the mission, vision, values, and strategic goals of Mary Washington Healthcare, demonstrating a commitment to high-quality service for patients, healthcare providers, and colleagues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Exhibit performance that meets the expectations and standards outlined in the position description.
- Foster collaborative relationships with MWHC/ED staff, nursing, and physicians through effective verbal communication and precise documentation.
- Assist nursing staff in gathering patient data and specimens.
- Support nursing and medical teams by executing designated patient care tasks.
- Engage in unit and MWHC infection control initiatives and performance enhancement processes.
- Assist the Manager with compliance readiness as required.
- Contribute to the unit's risk management strategy.
- Demonstrate strong communication, customer service, and teamwork skills.
- Take responsibility for personal professional development, regulatory compliance, and educational requirements at the departmental level.
- Maintain necessary licensure or certifications relevant to the position throughout employment.
- Exhibit proficiency in clerical duties using the hospital's information systems.
- Facilitate communication among diagnostic/testing areas, patient care areas, and families.
- Respond to patient call systems promptly.
- Relay patient and family requests to the appropriate personnel immediately upon receipt.
- Act on patient and family requests when suitable.
- Serve as a welcoming unit receptionist for associates, physicians, patients, families, and visitors.
- Coordinate physician and departmental consultations until tasks are completed.
- Ensure a safe and organized environment.
- Collaborate with the Supply Agent to manage equipment and supply needs.
- Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of medical equipment.
- Notify the relevant department of any equipment malfunctions.
- Initiate emergency protocols as directed.
- Perform additional duties as required, including tasks of other care team members.
- Fulfill Communication Coordinator responsibilities as necessary.
- Conduct venipuncture and initiate IVs.
- Carry out phlebotomy and specimen collection with proper labeling and transportation.
- Apply cardiac monitoring as needed; perform 12-lead EKGs.
- Prepare sterile trays for suturing and sterile procedures.
- Insert Foley catheters when appropriate and document intake and output.
- Perform splinting and/or apply orthopedic devices as per physician orders.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED is required.
- Current Virginia State EMT Certification and/or National Registry is required.
- AHA CPR certification is required.
- One (1) year of experience as an EMT, military corpsman, or in a clinical setting is preferred.
- AHA ACLS and PALS certifications are preferred.
