Job Overview

Under the guidance of the Executive Director, a Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for delivering engaging and effective fitness classes that support the overall wellness journey of participants.

The instructor is expected to foster a welcoming environment by addressing members by name whenever possible, expressing gratitude, and prioritizing relationship building at all times. This role plays a crucial part in embodying the mission, vision, and core values of the YMCA of Greater Hartford.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Lead group exercise sessions in accordance with the YMCA of Greater Hartford Program Quality Standards and specific class formats.
  2. Enhance personal expertise by participating in at least one YMCA training or other recognized professional development opportunities in the health and fitness sector.
  3. Oversee class participants to ensure a safe environment and promptly report any issues to the supervisor.
  4. Provide handouts, announcements, and evaluations to participants as directed by the supervisor.
  5. Welcome new members by addressing their inquiries and educating them about YMCA programs.
  6. Maintain an active interest in current branch offerings and share relevant information with members and the community.
  7. Represent the YMCA in a professional manner.
  8. Collaborate effectively with team members and assist colleagues as needed.
  9. Be accessible to all members, regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or fitness level, sharing knowledge and providing reliable health and fitness information.
  10. Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the studio/exercise area and report any equipment concerns to the Wellness staff or coordinator.
  11. Be knowledgeable about emergency protocols and respond appropriately.
  12. Maintain consistent attendance and provide at least two weeks' notice for any schedule changes.
  13. Take full responsibility for arranging qualified substitutes when necessary and inform the supervisor accordingly.
  14. Allocate at least ten minutes for class preparation and allow for five minutes post-class to engage with members.
  15. Arrive for scheduled classes well-groomed and in appropriate attire.
  16. Attendance at staff meetings is required.
  17. Promote only YMCA programs and services during working hours.
  • Hold and maintain current CPR certifications and Association Pre-Practicum approval.
  • Possess national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification.
  • Have certifications in relevant areas of expertise.
  • Preferred: At least one year of experience in teaching group wellness classes.
  • Complete Group Exercise Pre-Hire Practicum.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand for the entire duration of the shift.
  • Occasional bending and stooping required.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
