GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

The Lead Coastal Lifeguard is responsible for ensuring the safety of individuals on county beaches, providing emergency medical assistance, and enforcing safety regulations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Monitor beachgoers and assess marine and weather conditions to identify potential hazards and take necessary precautions.

• Execute rescues of individuals in distress in the water or on the beach; administer first aid and lifesaving techniques as required; utilize rescue equipment and coordinate emergency services.

• Manage swimming safety flags and signage as needed.

• Maintain and care for assigned rescue equipment.

• Enforce beach safety regulations, including adherence to state and local laws.

• Document daily activities and maintain records related to patient care.

• Ensure adequate supplies are available and restock as necessary.

• Participate in ongoing training and maintain all required certifications.

• Respond to public inquiries and represent the Beach Safety Division at community events.

• Develop and lead seasonal lifeguard training programs and public education courses, including CPR/AED and swimming lessons.

• Conduct technical rescues during flood situations, identifying hazards and employing advanced rescue techniques.

• Perform additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Must be at least 18 years old. Valid United States Lifesaving Association qualification or equivalent lifeguard training is necessary.

Licenses and Certifications: Must hold a valid CPR provider certification and obtain CPR instructor certification within one year of employment. Florida EMT certification is required or must be obtained within eighteen months of hire. Swift Water Rescue certification is also required or must be obtained within one year of hire. A valid driver’s license is necessary.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Physical Requirements: Ability to exert over 100 pounds of force occasionally, over 50 pounds frequently, or over 25 pounds constantly. Must be capable of climbing ladders and navigating various terrains. Requires stamina for prolonged outdoor exposure.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret various manuals and documents. Must communicate clearly and effectively with the public and prepare written reports.

Intellectual Skills: Ability to apply emergency medicine principles and make independent judgments in urgent situations.

Numerical Skills: Proficient in basic arithmetic operations.

Interpersonal Skills: Must interact effectively with the public and professionals, demonstrating tact and courtesy under pressure.
