Job Responsibilities- Provide first aid to injured children and staff, and everyday care of acutely ill children and staff.
- Keep daily records of students and staff seen in the health room.
- Maintain comprehensive current health records on each student.
- Manage children with communicable diseases.
- Respond to frequently encountered health issues, providing counseling and crisis intervention when required.
- Provide medically prescribed interventions.
- Administer over-the-counter medications per school physician-certified standing orders to students and staff.
- Collaborate with the parent/guardian and student to develop and implement an individualized health care plan for the student.
- Develop a nursing diagnosis and care plan with specific goals and interventions.
- Respond to child neglect or abuse issues (as required by Massachusetts statute).
- Perform state-mandated screening programs and provide appropriate referrals.
- Assist the Board of Health with immunization programs in the schools and community clinics for disease prevention.
- Prepare regular written reports for school officials and MDPH and other agencies.
- Carry out communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of blood-borne pathogens exposure, and hazardous medical waste disposal.
- Establish a process to identify students at risk for physical and psychosocial problems, communicate health needs to other school personnel as appropriate, and establish a referral system using both internal and community resources.
- Participate as a team member; with parental consent when indicated, share information with other team members about children with special health care problems that affect learning and growth.
- Act as an advocate for the student and family when appropriate.
- Attend Special Education Team meetings when needed.
- Identify health-related needs for inclusion in the individual education plan.
- Serve as a member of pertinent committees and teams.
- Teach the basic principles of health promotion and disease prevention to students and staff in the community.
- Assume responsibilities for in-service programs for school personnel for universal precautions, first aid, emergency care procedures.
- Act as a resource in health education to school personnel, students, and families.
- Understand and apply core public health functions of assessment, policy development, and assurance.
- Use community resources for referral of students with unmet health needs, including the need for a primary care provider.
- Participate in the planning and implementation of new services.
- Interpret school health service needs and the role of the school nurse to the school and community.
- Assume responsibility for own continuing education.
- Maintain certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Manager of Health Services or building principal.
- Ability to organize time, work independently, and accomplish tasks despite frequent interruptions; maintain detailed statistics and records as required by the assignment; communicate effectively with the public, co-workers, officials, and with those at other agencies.
- Valid current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Massachusetts.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure as a school nurse through the Massachusetts Department of Education.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in nursing or Master's Degree in Education from an accredited nursing program.
- Certification in CPR.
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
- Minimum of one year experience as a school nurse or related field.
- Bilingual Spanish.
This is a temporary position for the duration of a leave of absence or temporary vacancy. DESE-certified nurse's pay rate is $35/hour, and non-DESE-certified nurse's pay rate is $30/hour. The length of the school day is 6.5 hours, but subject to longer hours for schools with extended day. The number of school days are 185 days.
